ALMERE – With a father and aunt who played badminton at a high level and a grandfather who was chairman of BV Almere for years, the choice was quickly made. Sara started playing badminton at the age of 7, mainly because she thought it was a lot of fun.
Her talent was soon noticed and she was allowed to move on from the “badminiton” group to the normal groups, smaller selections and the Dutch youth selection. She has currently had a busy period with national and international tournaments. “I am happy with the progress I have made after a long period of training.”
Busy weeks
“A week looks very busy to me. On Monday morning I start training at the Regional Training Center (RTC) Almere before school at 6:45 am. On Tuesday evenings I train privately with Aram Mahmoud (former BV Almere player) and otherwise at the club. Wednesday morning at RTC and in the afternoon at Papendal with the national youth selection. Back at the RTC on Thursday morning and after school I do strength exercises at the physio. Finally, I still train on Friday mornings and there is often a tournament on the weekend. In order to end this school year without failing grades, I always try to do my school work as soon as I get home.”
Persistence and goals
Her family and friends would say she is a hard worker and go-getter. With a critical eye and strict on herself, she has big goals. “The Dutch Youth Championships are in June and my goal is to win the singles, doubles and mix in the U15 age category. I am also playing a number of international tournaments this year and I would like to reach the semis or finals again. The European Youth Championship is also coming up again, this year in Poland, and I am going for a medal. This is possible with a favorable draw, says Sara.”
All these international tournaments make badminton an expensive sport for Sara and she could really use financial help. “If sponsors are interested, I would like to see how we can help and strengthen each other.”
