Bad news for South American tennis, and especially for Colombia’s bogotel. Alejandro Gomez, currently ranked No. 489 in the ATP rankings, received a provisional suspension by the ITF after having tested positive for a doping control. The player from Cali ended up testing positive for a urine sample delivered during the Challenger in Bogotá, on October 19. That sample was taken to a laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in Montreal, and there it was confirmed that there was cocaine metabolites.

Gomez had been competing with some regularity on the ATP Challenger circuit in recent weeks. The second round that he reached precisely in Bogotá, and days ago in Florianópolis, was the best of his season. It remains to know if there will be an appeal from the 30-year-old tennis player, and well, what will be his final sanction, but safely, he will not be able to compete during the first months of 2022 at least.

The ITF statement

Gómez is provisionally suspended pending the determination of the charge against him in a full hearing in accordance with Article 8 of the Program. Gómez received a pre-charge notice of an anti-doping rule violation under article 2.1 of the program and / or article 2.2 on November 30 and was provisionally suspended with effect from December 15 ”.

“Mr. Gómez had (and retains) the right to request from the President of the Independent Tribunal summoned to hear his case why the Provisional Suspension should not be imposed (or should be annulled), but he has not exercised that right to date.“.
