Lukaku and De Bruyne’s year 2021 ends as it started

2021 has been a year of ups and downs for Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne. A trophy for one, two for the other, a lot of joy and satisfaction (12th and 8th in the Ballon d’Or) but also physical problems, quarantine because of the Covid then a difficult return to business for all of them. But, in the end, this year ends as it started for them: by being decisive.

On January 3, 2021, Lukaku already scored his first goal of the year, the day De Bruyne delivered his first assist. Twelve months later, their respective results have made them the most decisive Belgians of 2021 in the five major championships. With Inter then Chelsea but also the Devils, Big Rom totaled 33 goals and 11 assists in 2021. While KDB recorded 17 goals and 16 assists. That is to say 50 goals and 27 assists between them.

It is true that the Manchester City playmaker has somewhat lost his incredible sense of the last pass in recent months at the club. But the one delivered to Brentford (0-1) this Wednesday evening in Foden, his first of the season (finally!), Should serve as a trigger (he would also have given a second assist without an offside from Laporte whistled for a few millimeters).

At the same time, Lukaku opened the scoring with a solid header against Brighton (1-1) to end 2021 on a high note as well, despite the draw. Already both scorers on Sunday during Boxing Day to confirm their return to form, the accomplices will be able to start 2022, from this weekend, with full confidence. They will then fight for the coronation in the Premier League, even if the Citizens (50 pts) already take off the Blues (42).
