Has potential, FIFA president has plans to add the AFF Cup to the FIFA International Calendar: Okezone Bola

SINGAPORE – FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, sees the potential of the AFF Cup. Therefore, he has plans to include the biggest football tournament in Southeast Asia into the FIFA international calendar.

As is known, the AFF Cup has not been recognized as an official FIFA tournament. As a result, this tournament is not included in the FIFA international calendar.

This has been a complaint of the Indonesian football public for years. Because the coach of the Indonesian National Team (Timnas) always has trouble calling players because they have to negotiate with clubs.

Not only domestically, this has also spread to European clubs. Most recently, Egy Maulana Vikri has been unable to defend Indonesia since the start of the 2020 AFF Cup because he has to help FK Senica compete in the 2021-2022 Slovak League first.

“The AFF Cup is a tournament that unites all of Southeast Asia. I know there are more than 200 million people participating in the 2018 AFF Cup which is a fantastic number,” Infantino said. Tien Phuong, Tuesday (7/12/2021).

“ASEAN is also the region with the 5th largest economy in the world. So, the potential for football development here is huge,” he said.
