EUROPE LEAGUE. Missed penalty leads to crazy denouement in…

Group A

Olympique Lyon was already certain of group victory and so did it with a glorified B-team, without the injured Jason Denayer, against the Rangers. The match in France ended 1-1 after goals from Calvin Bassey (own goal) and Scott Wright. The Scots continue as number two, Sparta Prague (which won 2-0 against Bröndby) is allowed to go to the Conference League.

There was nothing more that could be done about AS Monaco’s group win. The Monegasques sent a lot of lesser known names onto the field against Sturm Graz, who took the lead via Jakob Jantscher. Kevin Volland took care of the 1-1 final score.

The battle for second place was between Real Sociedad and PSV. Basic player Adnan Januzaj helped his club to a convincing 3-0 victory after goals from Mikel Oyarzabal (2) and Alexander Sorloth (ex-Ghent). At PSV, which has to go to the Conference League, Yorbe Vertessen came in and Ibrahim Sangaré received a red card.

Nothing had been decided in the group yet, so it promised to be an exciting evening. Napoli, with Dries Mertens as a substitute, did what it had to do against Leicester for its own audience. Youri Tielemans and Timothy Castagne lost 3-2 in Italy. Adam Ounas and Elif Elmas (2) cleared goals from Jonny Evans and Kieman Dewsbury-Hall.

However, the Foxes still had every chance to advance in the Europa League. Legia Warsaw was awarded a penalty against Spartak Moscow in extra time, when trailing 0-1. A draw would see Leicester in second place for the next round… but the Poles missed. As a result, because of a better mutual duel against Napoli, Spartak surprisingly won the group. Tielemans and Castagne have been sentenced to the Conference League.
