Del Potro confirmed that he could return to the ATP in Buenos Aires • Diario Democracia

The last participation of Juan Martín Del Potro in an official way was in the Queen’s tournament, in mid-2019, where a fall caused him to suffer his second fracture in the patella in his right knee. From there began an ordeal for the Tandilense, who underwent surgery on four occasions. The last one was in March of this year, when a race against time began to try to reach the Olympics.

His return was delayed several months longer than expected, but he confirmed that he could return at the ATP in Buenos Aires, which will be played between February 5 and 13. His only participation in this tournament occurred in 2006, when he was 17 years old, when he lost against former world number 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

In the video he shared, Del Potro is seen hitting his right hand characteristic, firm with the backhand and moving around the court without any inconvenience to the naked eye. Precisely in this last aspect are the greatest doubts about his performance, since the long inactivity and the severity of the injury he suffered in the knee make his mobility an unknown, in a sport where the player must always be extremely thin on his legs to adjust the hits.

In addition to several Argentines (among them the last champion, Diego Schwartzman), the presence of Dominic Thiem and Casper Ruud stands out, who already knew how to consecrate themselves in the tournament organized by Martín Jaite. In the last edition, Schwartman ended a 13-year long drought without local champions in the ATP of Buenos Aires, since the last had been David Nalbandian in 2008.
