Chiefs overtake Broncos and clinch atop the AFC West

In a close race for the postseason that week after week gets tighter, Chiefs and Broncos came to the Sunday Night Fotball of week 13 in need of a victory to get them closer to the playoffs and, incidentally, begin to shape the AFC West.

After 60 minutes of football, Kansas City showed that the start of the campaign (3-4) was a setback and after defeat Denver by score of 22-9 establishes himself as the leader of the western division of the American Conference.

From the first quarter, the Chiefs paved their way to victory. In their first offensive series they opened the scoring with a 10-yard carry by Patrick Mahomes (15 of 29, 184 yards, one interception) and in his next attack 10 units were separated with Harrison Butker field goal (56 yards).

The Broncos managed to react to Butker’s FG and responded in the same way, a 42-yard kick from Brandon McManus. However, for Denver that was their only touchdown in nearly 40 minutes.

Second half

After a forgotten second quarter, the Broncos began the third period with an interception to Mahomes that had no consequence on the scoreboard. While Denver wasted the gift of the rival QB, Kansas City widened the gap with Butker’s second field goal.

The fourth period started with another FG of the Chiefs and was definitely inclined in favor of Kansas City with a 75-yard pick-six by Daniel Sorensen Teddy Bridgewater (22 of 40, 257 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions).

With the game practically decided, the Broncos woke up and made the meeting with a touchdown reception by Javonte Williams and the subsequent failed two-point conversion.

The result establishes the Chiefs as the best team in the AFC West. The Raiders’ loss to the WFT also benefited Kansas City. In addition, the disaster relegates the Broncos to twelfth place in the American Conference seed.
