Bayern Munich will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16. That was the result of the draw by the former Russian national player Andrei Arshavin on Monday in Nyon / Switzerland. “This team, this coach has a lot of mentality, everything is possible. It will be gripping and exciting,” said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
The duel is a new edition of the finals in the 1974 European Cup, when Munich played in two games (1: 1/4: 0). Last year both teams were group opponents, the German record champions came first, Atletico second. The round of 16 matches will be on 15./16. and 22./23. February (first leg) and on 8/9 and 15./16. March (second leg) played, the Munich team first play away in the group.
The final will take place on May 28th in St. Petersburg. With the start of the knockout round, the Champions League will be played for the first time without the traditional away goal rule. In the event of a tie after 90 or 120 minutes, goals scored away no longer bring an advantage.
