Basketball player and taxi driver disappear, relatives report

Morelia.— Alexis Francisco Cervantes Guerrero, a professional basketball player, and a taxi driver who was transporting him were reported missing in the limits of Michoacán and Jalisco.

Óscar Cervantes Guerrero, brother of the Libertadores de Querétaro player, said that Alexis had been in Michoacán for weeks for a tournament.

He explained to EL UNIVERSAL that since there was no Mexican league, his brother and other athletes were hired by promoters to reinforce other teams.

Alexis was hired to play in the municipality of Tancítaro. His contract ended on Monday, so on Tuesday, December 21, he had to return to his family’s home in Guasave, Sinaloa. Óscar commented that the sign that something was happening was that his brother did not arrive at his house on December 24.

He explained that Alexis boarded a passenger bus bound for Guadalajara, Jalisco, from where he would fly to Sinaloa, his homeland.

However, due to roadblocks and violence in Tangamandapio, the young man decided to take a taxi outside the Los Reyes bus terminal.

Family members reported that the player and the unit’s driver, named Marcos, had the last communication when they were on the Sahuayo-La Barca section, near the Jamay community, Ocotlán municipality, Jalisco.

Later, Óscar Cervantes said, nothing was heard from them; There are no traces nor have they asked for any ransom, so that it could be a kidnapping.

He said that the Michoacán prosecutor’s office informed him that an investigation folder had already been initiated ex officio, so it was not necessary to file a complaint.

Óscar asked those who may have captured Alexis to release him, so that he can return safely to his family; he is a good man, he affirmed.
