The youth teams of Spanish giants Real Madrid U18, Atletico Madrid U18 and Barcelona U18 have canceled their matches at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) this December. The cancellation was carried out to be aware of the entry of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus, the Omicron type, into Indonesia.
The three Spanish clubs were originally scheduled to compete in the International Youth Championship (IYC) in Bali and Jakarta on 4-11 December 2021. However, now, the Indonesian government has imposed restrictions on the entry of foreigners abroad to prevent the Omicron variant.
“Regarding the implementation of the IYC 2021, which was originally scheduled to be held on December 4-11, 2021 in Bali and in Jakarta, in accordance with the direction of the Indonesian government’s policy, it has been decided that all sports and cultural activities involving foreigners and potentially involving large numbers of people are not allowed for the time being,” said DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in a virtual conference, Friday (12/3/2021).
Anies said his party would support the central government’s steps in limiting activities that invite crowds so that they have the potential to transmit COVID-19. To that end, the entire series of football tournament activities up to soft launching JIS will be suspended until the situation is under control.
“Included in it is a delay soft launching JIS until the pandemic situation and the spread of the Omicron variant virus has been more controlled and more predictable,” he explained.
Finally, Anies thanked all parties for the hard work of making this event a success.
“Even though in the end this activity had to be postponed, but in all that until the last minute the decision was taken there were so many parties who had worked hard and had spent all their energy resources to prepare this event,” he added.
Previously, it was reported that three world clubs together with the Indonesia All Star U20 were planned to compete in an international football tournament or International Youth Championship in December.
The preliminary round matches are scheduled for December 4-8, 2021 at the Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium in Bali Province. Then, the final match will be on December 11, 2021 at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS).
“This year’s participants based on popularity and convenience in administrative terms, we have accepted 3 big clubs, namely Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona. For Indonesia, Indonesia is the All Star,” said Pancoran Soccer Field Chairman Gede Widiade in a virtual press conference, Thursday. (18/11).
This competition is also a soft launching Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). The new stadium in Jakarta will hold a match for the third place and the final on December 11.
