Barça star Sergio Agüero announces the end of his career – striker has heart problems

He moved to FC Barcelona in July but the striker has now announced the end of his career. The Argentine international was last out due to heart problems – the decision was not an easy one for him.

The Argentine national soccer player Sergio Agüero from FC Barcelona has ended his career as expected. The 33-year-old announced this decision on Wednesday. Agüero suffers from severe cardiac arrhythmias. He collapsed on the pitch against Alaves at the end of October.

“It’s a very difficult moment for me,” said Agüero tearfully, “but I made the decision because of my health. I’m very proud of my career.”

The striker had only joined the Catalans in the summer after ten highly successful years at Manchester City. Like other club legends, the Skyblues’ record scorer is to be honored with a statue in front of the Etihad Stadium.

For City, with whom Aguero won five English championships, he has scored 260 goals in 390 games. Previously, after moving from Independiente in Argentina to Europe, he was active for Atletico Madrid, where he won the Europa League and scored 100 times in 230 appearances. For Barca he only appeared five times and scored one goal.

He wore the Albiceleste’s jersey 101 times (41 goals). He was with Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final, which was lost 1-0 to Germany. In 2008 he became Olympic champion, in 2021 he won the Copa America – always alongside world star Lionel Messi.
