Voting on Triszvaigznubalva.lv will last until November 28. During that time, every sports fan will have the opportunity to express their support for the candidates of the 2021 nominations with their voice once a day.
Candidates were initially nominated by a wide range of professionals from the sports community and industry, including recognized Olympic and non-Olympic federations, sports organizations and sports journalists. By counting the votes obtained in the first round, the jury approved the 11 nominees who received the most votes and are put to the referendum.
Artūrs Plēsnieks, a bronze medalist in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Agnis Čavars and Kārlis Pauls Lasmanis, Olympic champions in 3×3 basketball, as well as boxer Mairis Briedis, are applying for the Athlete of the Year award. Wrestler Anastasia Grigoriev, beach volleyball player Anastasia Kravchenoka and Tina Graudina, tennis player Alona Ostapenko and biathlete Baiba Bendika will compete for the athlete of the year award.
Meanwhile, there are two candidates for the Paralympic Athlete of the Year award – athletics Diāna Dadzīte and rider Rihards Snikus. This year a new nomination “Athlete of the Year in technical sports” has been added, and speed rider Andžejs Lebedevs, rallycross pilot Jānis Baumanis, rally pilot Mārtiņš Sesks and motocross rider Pauls Jonass are applying for the award.
Olympic champions in 3×3 basketball, sleigh riding team Andris Šics / Juris Šics, as well as Olympic semi-finalists in beach volleyball Mārtiņš Pļaviņš / Edgars Točs and Graudiņa / Kravčenoka have been nominated for the award in the individual sports of the best sports team.
Two national units are applying for the award for the best sports team of the year – the Latvian men’s hockey team and the Latvian men’s volleyball team. Three candidates have been nominated for the Best Coach of the Year award – the coach of Plēsnieks and other award-winning weightlifters Eduards Andruškevičs, the head coach of the Latvian men’s hockey team Harijs Vītoliņš and the leader of the 3×3 basketball team Raimonds Feldmanis.
The predator and the 3×3 basketball team have also been nominated in the nomination “Breakthrough of the Year in Sports”, where the competition will be compiled by kayaker Roberts Akmens.
The city of Liepāja, the city of Rīga or the municipality of Valmiera region will look for the honor of the annual sports municipality, but the organizations supervising basketball, hockey and volleyball will fight for the title of the annual sports federation.
Three candidates have been nominated for the annual event sport – the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan and the gold medals of 3×3 basketball players won there, as well as the World Hockey Championship held in Riga.
The final result of the “Three Star Awards” referendum consists of a fan vote (50% of the vote), athletes nominated by sports organizations (LOK, LPK, LSFP, each of three athletes) (25% of the vote) and sports journalists (25% of the vote) vote.
Last year, boxer Mairis Briedis was recognized as the athlete of the year, but the athletes – cross-country skier Patrīcija Eiduka.
