The best player in the Superior Basketball League who played street tournaments to survive

Jeremy Agosto went to the United States to work in a factory as an order packer. She needed to take care of her mother Omayra, who had suffered a stroke and earn money to support her daughter Mikaela. He spent almost a year there until in December 2020 he returned to his native Puerto Rico determined to fight to fulfill his dream of being a professional basketball player, without neglecting his obligations. “I played in weekend street tournaments where they beat me $ 500 or $ 700 and in the Puerto Rican Basketball League, they gave me $ 100 per game, so I survived,” explains Agosto, who two months ago achieved his desire in Nicaragua , where he has become the best player in the 2021 Superior Basketball League.

The Puerto Rican Basketball League (LBP) is the second most important, behind the National Superior Basketball (BSN), as the professional league is called. The LBP players are semi-professionals and the teams play once a week. Agosto, 24, had won the title the last two tournaments with the Capitanes de San Juan and won the MVP last season. That good performance caught the attention of the Baqueros de Bayamón, who signed it after passing a test week.

“At that time I had no words to express myself, tears came to my eyes, I never thought that Bayamón would give me the opportunity because not all of them are given, they choose only the talented player with projection,” says Agosto, who the next day After signing, the team manager called him to tell him that he would not be able to play with them due to new league regulations. “The player who was not taken in one year in the Draft had to register the next to be chosen. I joined in 2019, but not last year, ”explains Agosto, who had agreed to $ 4,000 a month on his first professional contract.

The disappointment of the Puerto Rican point guard was not so great because before trying out at Bayamón, he had contacted César Fornos, a well-known national basketball manager, to find him a team in Nicaragua. Diriangén was the only one who showed interest in his services and since he arrived he responded by becoming the best player in the league by registering – according to league statistics – throughout the season 876 points in valuation, which is the statistic that measures the efficiency of a player based on the time played, the effectiveness of the shots made and points scored.

«Here I am earning much less than what they were going to pay me there, but what I was looking for was the opportunity to show myself, I did not care about the money. Thank God things have gone well for me and according to my agent, up to seven teams have shown interest for the next BSN season ”, says Agosto, the best player in the Superior League, who will try this Wednesday (6:30 pm) to be decisive again to equalize the semifinal series against Real Estelí in the fourth game.
