Len Schoormann was angry. That was clear on Saturday after the defeat of the Skyliners Frankfurt at the Löwen Braunschweig. At the Magenta Sports microphone, the 19-year-old complained about the defensive behavior of the Bundesliga basketball team – and about the teamwork on the court. “We weren’t good enough defensively today and allowed too many runs. We didn’t communicate enough as a team today , in the end we are just too much in our own way, “said the Darmstadt native, who is actually considered a cautious interview partner.

It was no accident that Schoormann ventured out. The Skyliners had just missed the final four of the BBL-Pokal and had to admit defeat to a Brunswick team 65:86, which – with all due respect – are not really a top team. And that was mainly due to the Frankfurters themselves, whose game came across as much too static to bring the opponent seriously into distress.

More three-point than two-point throws

On the defensive, the Hessians allowed themselves to be confused by simple pick-plays far too often. Offensively, the Skyliners took one three at a time. In fact, the guests took more three- than two-point throws. They just put these attempts next to one another in a row. With a hit rate of a little more than 18 percent from a distance, you won’t find a green branch. If the opponent then also dominates what is happening under the basket and grabs the second balls: Game over.

“We didn’t show a good team performance,” complained Schoormann, who with 20 points was still the best thrower in Hessen. And that was exactly the problem with the Skyliners: The team relied too often on individual actions, the system of new coach Diego Ocampo was far too seldom visible. “We tried to counter this in the second and third quarters. But we didn’t play at the necessary level in the first and last quarters,” the coach admitted frankly.

Hunger has to come back

This is not an unknown problem for the Hessians. A new coach, a new game system, many injured players and a young, inconsistent team: The mix is ready, which leaves the Skyliners in the bottom of the table in the Bundesliga and now also shattered the dream of the Final Four.

In order to go into the approaching international break with a good feeling, a win in the next Bundesliga game in Würzburg (November 21) is actually a must. How can that be achieved? “We are the youngest team in the league, so we have to be the hungriest,” said Schoormann. There was little of it to be seen in Braunschweig.
