After years of preparation, the construction of the new Academy Tien school building on the Berlin square has officially started today. One of the largest secondary schools in Utrecht and a competition sports hall will soon be located together in one building. The start of construction was given by alderman Anke Klein (Education).

“A beautiful school building and spacious sports hall with a unique square on the roof will be built here that the entire neighborhood can enjoy,” says the alderman. “Moreover, the building is completely in line with this time. Several functions come together and children and young people get a smooth transition from primary to secondary school here.”
The iconic building on Berlin Square will have a lot of glass, bay windows and an open layout. The sports hall will be completely suitable for competitive sports such as futsal, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton and indoor hockey. Almost every sport can be played at NOC*NSF level.
A large public square will be built on the roof of the sports hall. There will be a lot of greenery, beautiful seats, a greenhouse and a running track of exactly 100 meters on this square. The square is available to the entire neighbourhood, and the students of Academie Tien will also use it.
The new school building fits the teaching concept of Academie Tien: learning with guts. It is a public, comprehensive secondary school for mavo, havo and vwo with 1,600 students and is part of NUOVO Schools. Students have different talents and backgrounds and follow subjects at different levels. Academy Tien has a junior department and a lower and upper school. Pupils from the age of 10 are welcome in the junior department. This enables them to make a step-by-step transition from primary to secondary education.
The contractor will build almost energy neutrally and will ensure that Utrecht will soon have a beautiful new school and sports hall that are connected to district heating.
