CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs added a veteran to their rotation on Friday, claiming left-handed pitcher Wade Miley on waiver from the Cincinnati Reds.
Miley, 35, is 12-7 with an earned-run average of 3.37 in 28 starts for Cincinnati this season.
He pitched his first career scoring or hitting game in a 3-0 win at Cleveland on May 7.
Miley has a US $ 10 million option or a $ 1 million buyout clause.
The team will likely choose the option after the waiver request is made.
The Cubs are looking for help from the mound after showing a 71-91 record this year, their most losses since 2014.
The Cubs pitchers finished with an earned-run average of 4.87, placing 27th overall in the Majors.
Miley is 97-92 with a 4.15 earned run average in 11 seasons in Major Baseball.
He also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros.
Many other waived players have been claimed.
The San Francisco Giants acquired right-hander Hunter Harvey from the Baltimore Orioles.
Outfielder Tim Locastro, who was with the Yankees, ends up in Boston, Andrew Velazquez, an infielder who also lined up with the Yankees, joins Los Angeles Angels, outfielder Greg Allen, who was also a New Yorker, packed his bags for Pittsburgh and right-hander Jharel Cotton ended up in Minnesota from Texas.
Left-hander Ryan Sherriff moves from Philadelphia to Tampa Bay, outfielder Austin Dean, who was from St. Louis, joins San Francisco and left-hander Francisco Perez leaves Cleveland for Washington.
The Indians also declined to exercise their $ 7 million option for wide receiver Roberto Pérez.
