La Jornada – Mexican golfer Carlos Ortiz, second in Mayakoba

Carmen beach. Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland won for the second consecutive year in the PGA Mayakoba Championship tournament held in Playa del Carmen, four strokes ahead of Mexican Carlos Ortiz.

Hovland, 24, signed a final round of 67 strokes, four under par, at El Camaleón field for a cumulative 261 (-23), a tournament record.

“I have played pretty good golf all week. I was not at my best level but I would still like to putt as I have done more often today, ”said Hovland, who on Saturday achieved his best round as a professional with 62 strokes.

It is the third title of the US PGA circuit for Hovland, after in 2020 he conquered the Mayakoba tournament and the Puerto Rico Open.

The 17th-ranked PGA golfer from Oslo finished four strokes behind Ortiz despite the hometown idol hitting the gas with five birdies over the final seven holes for a final round of 66 shots.

Ortiz, who finished with a cumulative 265 strokes, dreamed of lifting his second PGA trophy in his country.

The player from Guadalajara, number 78 in the world ranking, gave Mexico its first PGA title in 42 years in 2020, the Vivint Houston Open.

The third place was occupied by the American Justin Thomas, five strokes behind Hovland, and the fourth his compatriot Scottie Scheffler, six.

The Chilean Joaquín Niemann shared the fifth place with the American Matthew Wolff, both with 268 strokes, while the Mexican Abraham Ancer and the Spanish Sergio García finished in the group in the seventh place with 269.

The top three in the world rankings, the Spanish Jon Rahm and the Americans Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson, did not compete in this tournament.
