The compelling duel between Frankfurt and Antwerp was marred by the incidents in the second half. Especially the explosion of a bomb at the home fans startled everyone. Antwerp players Birger Verstraete and Jean Butez even grabbed the ears with a painful grimace.

The confrontation between the two teams also got out of hand in the first leg. It started in advance when some Frankfurt supporters committed vandalism around the Bosuil. Some members of Antwerp’s hard core took revenge during the match by throwing smoke bombs at the Frankfurt goalkeeper.
Afterwards, Germans were attacked by some hotheads in an Antwerp trade. UEFA then punished Antwerp by imposing one match behind closed doors against Fenerbahce.
