BASKETBALL: FIBA ​​takes stock of the year

Meeting by videoconference on Thursday, November 18, the Central Office of the supreme basketball court took huge decisions during its last session of the year 2021. Also, Fiba officials took note of the various reports presented to them. Here are the highlights.

Announcement of the host cities of the qualifying tournaments for the Fiba Women’s World Cup 2022.

The Fiba Central Office has confirmed that the cities of Belgrade, (Serbia), Osaka (Japan) and Washington (United States of America) will host the four Qualifying Tournaments for the Fiba Women’s World Cup ( TQCF) 2022. Belgrade will host two tournaments, while there will be one in Washington, DC, and one in Osaka. These TQCFs will take place from February 10 to 13, 2022.

Application process for the 2026 and 2027 FIBA ​​World Cups

The Central Board has approved the parallel application process for the Fiba Women’s World Cup 2026 and the Fiba World Cup 2027. Following the next distribution of the documents allowing to apply, the national federations will be invited in due course to submit their declaration of interest, in February 2022 for the 2027 Fiba World Cup and in June 2022 for the 2026 FIBA ​​Women’s World Cup.

Fiba 2023 World Cup qualifiers

Reports have been made on the progress of preparations for the 2023 Fiba World Cup Qualifiers, which begin on November 25. The qualifying window in November, the first step towards the world tournament to be held in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan, already promises great posters. In total, there will be six qualifying windows between November 2021 and February 2023.

Successful summer competitions

The Central Office received detailed reports on the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournaments played in late June-early July in Canada, Croatia, Lithuania and Serbia, as well as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tournaments.

Success of the Fiba Continental Cups 2021

The 2021 Fiba Women’s Continental Cups have been successfully completed in all regions. The four women’s events – the Fiba Women’s EuroBAsket 2021, the Fiba Women’s Afrobasket 2021 and the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup 2021 as well as the Fiba Afrobasket Masculin which was played in Rwanda, were successful. The other Fiba Continental Cups – Fiba EuroBasket 2022, Fiba America Cup 2022 and the Fiba Asia Cup 2022 will take place next year.

Club competitions

Fiba Central Office has received the latest information on the sixth season of the Basketball Champions League, which kicked off in October, and the Basketball Champions League Americas. The 3rd edition of the latter will begin in December. Strategic Goals and Basketball For Good

Reports on the three strategic priorities – strengthening national federations, women in basketball and expanding the FIBA ​​family – were presented to the Central Office. The Fiba Foundation looked back on its many successes accumulated throughout the year, thanks in particular to several “Basketball For Good” activities.

A new initiative to educate and protect players from abuse in basketball was discussed during the meeting. A program will be developed with the collaboration of the Players’ Commission and partners, and will see the light of day in 2022.
