“Avilés has made a radical change, it has nothing to do with what was before”

Diego Pereira played his first minutes in the league this season with Real Avilés on Sunday at El Helmántico. The defender is already recovered from the hamstring tear he suffered in the Federation Cup final against Llanes. Since that date, he had only played the extra time minutes against Racing Santander at Suárez Puerta in a match of the National Federation Cup. Diego Pereira (Avilés, 20-4-99). He is the longest-serving player at the club, in which he is in his fourth season.

-I would already like to re-enter the starting eleven.

– The truth is that many. It was a long time now, but I knew that the work I was doing was going to pay off, and it did.

“How did you find it?”

-Well. Better than I expected. In the first ten minutes, it was difficult for me to get into the game but then everything went well. I suffered a little in the second half, until the changeover, but it is logical because training is not the same as the rhythm of the games, but it is a matter of time. They were my first minutes in the league and I’m happy.

– With the absence of Nacho López it was clear that he was going to play?

“I knew I would have more chances.” During the week you get used to the idea, but it was nothing fixed

“Chiqui de Paz didn’t say anything to you?”

-No. We have a squad of 22 players that anyone can play for. There is great competition and I think that is very good for the team; and also for the coach, who has more options to choose from.

– How do you assess the draw achieved in El Helmántico?

–With a bittersweet sensation. On the one hand, positive because we got a point that allows us to maintain the good line that the team is leading and stay at the top of the table. But, on the other hand, I think we missed two points. We played the last part of the game with one more player, but we weren’t able to unbalance the score. I think we were not as successful with the ball as in previous games and that prevented us from having more options to win the game.

-The team continues to show that it is very difficult to beat them

-Yes. And that is very important. Everything that is adding is important, and more if you do it outside the home. Now we have to try to make that point good with a victory on Sunday at Suárez Puerta and that will be when we give it more value.

– How do you see the category?

–Very even. Any rival can beat you. The games are all decided by small details, so not losing concentration is key.

– He is the player who has been in the squad the longest and is also from Avilés.

– I am the only one left from the season of defaults, with Juanma Castañón and more than 60 players who passed through the squad. I thought about leaving, but I was at home and Avilés has always been my club. Now, the change that the club has undergone, both sportingly and personally, is radical. With the arrival of the new owners, the project is exciting. It has nothing to do with what was before. A great squad has been built and the club’s aspirations are the highest

– And the fans?

– It is another of the positive aspects. In past seasons, we were almost alone in games, with family members and little else. Now, the fans have recovered their illusion. He is with the team and helps us grow.

– What is the objective of the team?

-To continue in the same line that we now carry. If we succeed, it will allow us to be at the top of the table when the decisive moment of the season arrives. We do not renounce anything, but being aware that the category is very even and many teams aspire to the same.

Nacho López, only casualty

Defender Nacho López is the only casualty in the Avilesino team ahead of next Sunday’s game against Pontevedra. The full-back missed his first match of the season in the league competition at Helmántico. Nacho López had to retire at halftime from the match against Ceares played at Suárez Puerta due to physical discomfort and did not travel to Salamanca with the Avilesian expedition. Subjected to the appropriate medical tests, yesterday the club officially confirmed that the player suffers a fiber break in the adductor of his right leg, an injury that will keep him away from the team for at least three weeks.
