ATC 2021 Delay in Mandalika: Danger Signals Welcomed by Organizer Commitment All

KOMPAS.com – The racing event titled Asia Talent Cup (ATC) which was planned to take place at the Mandalika Circuit, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Sunday (11/14/2021), was postponed until this weekend.

The postponement of the 2021 Asia Talent Cup has reportedly occurred due to unmet safety factors. This is a danger signal in the organization of an international racing event at the Mandalika Circuit.

Related to this, the organizers are committed to taking careful preparation steps to ensure safety during the race.

The postponement of the 2021 Asia Talent Cup was officially announced by Dorna Sports and the Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA).

The 2021 Asia Talent Cup event at the Mandalika Circuit is scheduled to hold four races. Two of the races were originally scheduled to take place on Sunday (14/11).

After being postponed, the two races are planned to be held simultaneously with the next two races and the Mandalika World Superbike (WSBK) event on 19-21 November.

“The Asia Talent Cup race, which was supposed to be held at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit on Sunday, November 14, has been rescheduled for next week,” Dorna Sports said in a statement posted on the official Asia Talent Cup website.

“Dorna Sports, together with the Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA), can confirm that the ATC season finale will consist of four races and run from November 19 to 21, concurrently with WSBK.”

In addition to the Dorna Sports announcement, there was an explanation from Astra Honda Motor’s Motorsport Manager, Rizky Christianto, who accompanied the four racers at ATC.

He explained that the riders had entered the track at around 11.45 am and were already in the race position. However, they were never released to warm up and were instead asked to return to their home paddock because there is a safety issue.

“Then it was discovered there was a safety issue, not on the track, but on the circuit support, like marshal” said Rizky.

“Safety comes first and may be considered potentially dangerous if there is an accident, so it was decided by Dorna and MGPA to postpone it,” said Rizky.

In response to this delay, the Race Leader, Dyan Dilato, said that there were several types of driver safety factors that had not been met, such as a number of track sections that were not yet free of dust, pits that were not all ready, until marshal who are not ready, both in terms of quantity and ability.

Marshal is an officer who was deployed to expedite the course of the race. They are tasked with raising the flag if there is an incident, lifting the bulletin board, helping the fallen racer, and extinguishing the fire.

“They should have served one year as marshal at the national championship, then regional, then the world championship,” said Dyan, who also coached the athletes marshal.

Furthermore, Dyan said that his party was committed to solving this problem. It is said to be holding a local duck motorbike championship.

Meanwhile, the General Chair of the Indonesian Motorcycle Association (IMI), Bambang Soesatyo, stated that his party as the national automotive sports regulator would strive to meet the safety aspects at the Mandalika Circuit.

He also guaranteed that the final round of the Asia Talent Cup consisting of four races would still take place next week.

“I am responsible as the General Chair of IMI as a regulator representing the world automotive sports federation in Indonesia,” said Bamsoet, Bambang Soesatyo’s nickname, quoted from Antara News.

“We will immediately fulfill the completeness of safety aspects in accordance with the regulations issued by the FIM,” said Bamsoet.

Bamsoet explained that according to FIM regulations, there should be at least eight people marshal in every post.

“This is what we will complete,” said Bamsoet.

The organizer of national and international motor racing, Faryd Sungkar, then emphasized the problem of quality and quantity marshal cannot be underestimated because it can lead to fatal accidents.

According to Faryd, to solve the problem marshal, the committee needs to bring in chief marshal from every part, from Sentul Circuit and Sepang Circuit, to lead, monitor and improve quality marshal local.

After holding WSBK, the manager of the Mandalika Circuit must also train para marshal intensively to welcome the MotoGP event.
