An insulting banner causes a scandal during the Gravelines-Le Portel derby

Gravelines-Dunkerque supporters unfurled an insulting banner during their team’s 101-58 championship match against Le Portel. Management promises sanctions.

Scandal during “Opalico”. Not on the floor, where there was not really a match in the northern derby of the French basketball championship: Gravelines-Dunkirk crushed Le Portel with the score of 101-58 on Friday. The object of the controversy was in the stands. An insulting banner was displayed during the evening by supporters from Gravelines. “Welcome to the rats portelois”, could one read in the room.

Supporters of the Portel were moved on Twitter. “Bravo to BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque for the lesson given to our players! Now we await the explanations and the apologies concerning the banner deployed by the brown shirts in the room. A first, shameful, that goes without saying”, wrote the supporters club The musical star.

In the process, the Portel club reacted to reveal the words of the banner and challenge the leaders of Gravelines-Dunkerque: “Hardly conceivable to accept such a banner in a basketball hall after so many games behind closed doors”.

“He finds that normal, he assumes”

“Friends of Portel, this banner was out of place and had nothing to do in our spans,” tweeted Hervé Beddeleem, executive director of Gravelines, to apologize. “It is shameful, scandalous, I went up like a clock”, he then declared to The team, by deploring that one of the authors of this banner did not offer apologies or regrets. “No, he finds that normal, he assumes,” said the leader, before promising sanctions. “We can’t let this go,” he promised.

After seven matches played in Betclic Élite, Gravelines-Dunkerque is in 6th place in the standings. Le Portel, which has only two wins, is struggling in 16th place.
