WTA – Kontaveit is the last player to qualify for WTA finals

Cologne (SID) – Tennis player Anett Kontaveit qualified as the last player for the WTA finals in Guadalajara / Mexico (November 8th to 14th) with her tournament victory in Cluj-Napoca / Romania. The Estonian prevailed 6: 2, 6: 3 in the final on Sunday against the top seeded local hero Simona Halep.

Kontaveit, who won the WTA tournament in Moscow last week, is now among the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time and will be the first Estonian to take part in the final tournament of the eight best tennis players of the year.

Previously, the former French Open winner Iga Swiatek (Poland), the two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza, Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa (both Spain), Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus), French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova, Karolina Pliskova (both Czech Republic) and the Greek Maria Sakkari bought their ticket. World number one and Wimbledon winner Ashleigh Barty (Australia) ended her season prematurely on Saturday and will be absent from Guadalajara.

Last season, the WTA finals were canceled due to the corona crisis, this year the tournament was moved from Shenzhen / China to Mexico.
