Brandon Hagy and Chad Ramey (photo) inherited a good draw Thursday at Port Royal in Bermuda and were able to sign the afternoon a card of 65 (-6) synonymous with 1st place in the standings when darkness forced the organizers to interrupt the game.
It was Matthew Fitzpatrick, author of a 71 (par) card, who best summed up the general feeling for the morning players. The Englishman who is one of the few players, along with Patrick Reed, in the world top 30 present at the start of this 6th tournament of the 2022 season, explained:
“Winds like that we look at it but we don’t play golf with it.”

This is from yesterday, Lucas Herbert’s caddie, I very much underestimate what a 25mph wind is. pic.twitter.com/FvG7iZpulc

The wind and rain caused a short hiatus of play in the morning and afternoon although the intensity of the wind lessened the gusts were strong enough to make the small putts very stressful.

Under these conditions we can only admire Chad Ramey’s blank bogey card. While Brandon Hagy signed 9 birdies and conceded 3 bogeys including a very small putt missed at 5 when his ball was deflected by a big gust.
Note also the good start of the South African sensation of the year 2021 Garrick Higgo (67), double winner on the European Tour last spring and victorious in his first tournament on the PGA Tour on his first try!
Reed’s feat
We will also remember this difficult first round Patrick Reed’s incredible eagle 3 at 17. The American put his ball in the penalty area and then landed his 6 iron shot from the small rough, with his feet on the road intended for the carts!
33 players were under the Thursday night but some will have to get up earlier than expected this Friday to complete their first round interrupted the day before. Among them just 6 players had set off in the dantesque conditions of the morning games.
