“TTT Rīga” season may be over for experienced basketball player Baško / Article

Gunta Baško, an experienced basketball player of “TTT Rīga”, suffered an injury in the team’s lost Euroleague game in Spain on Wednesday, which will most likely prevent her from returning to the field until the end of the season, said Mārtiņš Gulbis, the head coach of Latvia’s most titled women’s club.

In the game against Salamanca’s “Perfumerias Avenida”, Baško was injured in the first minute, which also affected the team’s performance in the match lost on Wednesday. Baško is already spending the 27th season in big basketball, at the age of 41 he is also the chairman of the club’s board.

“Already in the first minute of the game we lost Gunta Baško – most likely, also for the whole season,” Gulbi quoted on the club’s website. “We were forced to completely change the game plan – in the third position we stayed with a much smaller line-up than we would like to be. Another player had to go on the field at once. [Vanesai Jasai].”

Artūrs Štālbergs, General Manager of “TTT Rīga”, told Latvian Radio that Baško is a rupture of the Achilles tendon, but the exact duration of treatment will be known after examinations in Riga. The tendon for the basketball player has not been broken, so there are hopes for Bashko to return to the field later in the season, Stalbergs explained.

In turn, coach Gulbis acknowledged that it is important for each player in the team and it was difficult to compensate against the aggressive and iron defense of “Perfumerias Avenida”. Gulbis considers the loss with a 30-point deficit to be undeservedly severe. He called the contribution of the visiting players insufficient, as two legionnaires were left without points.

After a two-lap game, the top four teams in the group of eight will advance to the quarter-finals, while the fifth and sixth place finishers will advance to the Eurocup quarter-finals. “TTT Rīga” lost in the first two games of the tournament.
