The Gran Trail Picos de Europa 2021: 9 hours and 28 minutes of race for Adrián García from Huesca

In the female category, the Galician Begoña Pacio López, achieved victory in the long race of the Gran Trail Picos de Europa, arriving at the finish line in Benia de Onis after 12 hours 44 minutes and 53 seconds. Second, first among the Asturian women, was Verónica Gutiérrez Diego (Cangas de Onís Athletics), with 13 hours, 41 minutes and 20 seconds; and third, as well as second Asturian, Mariane Rodriguez Suárez (GM Ensidesa-Gijón), with 14.27.54. Fourth, Isabel Martinez Martino (GM Picu Pienzu), with 15.45.14, and fifth, Olvido Estrada (Team Obaya), with 17.05.53.

In pairs in the GTPE of 70 kilometers the Cantabrians prevailed Manuel Lavin Rios and Daniel Soria Lanero (Vertical Kilometer Torrelavega) who needed 10 hours 59 minutes and 32 seconds to complete the tour.

At 6.00 am the start of the “queen” test of the GTPE, to enter the Picos National Park, visiting bucolic places such as the Onís, La Molina and Pandescura ports, Riu Casañu, the Belbin sheepfold, Culiembru Canal, Cares Route, Trea Canal, Jultayu (1,895 meters altitude ), Vega de Ario or Lagos de Covadonga, before reaching the finish line, also located in the capital of Onís, in Benia. Total, 70 kilometers of itinerary and 5,300 meters of positive unevenness, with a lot of accumulated mud in some sections that made it even harder.

In the distance of 35 kilometers and 2,200 meters of positive elevation gain (Camba, 1,042 meters, maximum height), the triumph was awarded by the cabraliego Cristian Gutiérrez Espina (GDM Cabrales-Dotilos), with 3 hours 15 minutes and 32 seconds. Borja Fernández Navarro (Running x Morcín) and Hanot Echevarría (Osasunalde), were second and third, respectively. In women, the first three positions were harvested by Karla Trillo Fernández (CCA Ría de Foz), with 4.29.27; Cristina Belmar Moreno (Roda Trail) and María Cacho.

In the 35 kilometer test, In the pairs modality, the winners were Javier and Sergio Pajares Rojo (La Braña-Solorunners) with 3 hours 41 minutes and 38 seconds. Estivel and María Martinez Medina (Club Target Trail), with 4.14.41, occupied the second position; and in third place were classified Julián García Morodo and Rubén García Luque (La Braña-Solorunners) with 4.15.20.

Bruno Argüelles Díaz (Nava Trail) took the victory in the format of 22 kilometers of route and 1,383 meters of positive elevation gain, when the stopwatch stopped in 2 hours 17 minutes and 05 seconds. Alberto Fernández Palacios, from GMea Trail (2.17.34) and Luis Ribaya Rodrigo, from Parraguán, from GM Picu Pienzu (2.19.45), accompanied him on the podium. Meanwhile, in girls, Larraitz Extebeste won (2.45.35), ahead of María García González (2.50.31) and Creta García Morán from Piloñesa (2.54.14).

In the distance of 10 kilometers Xabel Guiu Martinez won with a record of 50 minutes and 27 seconds. Eduardo Llano Rumayor (Engarmaos) was second and Fran Castillo, third. In women, victory for Anna Quilez Ribera (1 hour 00 minutes 15 seconds), followed by Andrea Barranco Ruiz and Cristina Escudero Martínez (GM Picu Pienzu) from Rio de Janeiro, this with 1 hour 10 minutes and 23 seconds.

The GTPE, with departure in the town of Benia and sponsored by the Onís City Council, It brought together some 1,300 athletes, despite the consequent change of dates, highlighting on this occasion the wide Asturian representation by autonomous communities, ahead of Galicians and Madrilenians. For obvious reasons, due to the issue of the pandemic, the presence of foreign athletes was reduced, although some Portuguese, French, British, Mexican, Colombian and Danish runners participated.
