Norrie became the first Briton to win the Indian Wells tennis tournament. The number 26 in the world rankings prevailed in the Californian desert with 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1 against the Georgian Nikolos Basilashvili and won his first Masters title. Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

“I’m so happy, this is my biggest win,” said Norrie. The 26-year-old managed what his great compatriots had tried in vain: The two-time Olympic champion Andy Murray had lost in the 2009 final, as had Tim Henman in 2002 and 2004. Greg Rusedski also missed the last step to the title in 1998.

For Norrie it was the second tournament victory in the sixth final on the ATP tour. He secured his debut title this year in Los Cabos, Mexico. With his triumph he made it into the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time in his career.

Badosa beats Azarenka

In the women’s category, Paula Badosa from Spain defeated the two-time tournament winner Viktoria Azarenka (Belarus). The 23-year-old, who beat the former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel) in the quarter-finals, secured her second WTA title with a 7: 6 (7: 5), 2: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2). She had previously only won the WTA tournament in Belgrade in May. In the quarterfinals Badosa had prevailed against Angelique Kerber.
