NHL coach resigns after abuse incident – sports

The head coach of the Florida Panthers, Joel Quenneville, has resigned because of an abuse case with the NHL team Chicago Blackhawks more than ten years ago. According to the league, this was preceded by a conversation with NHL boss Gary Bettman on Thursday (local time). After that, everyone agreed that “it is no longer appropriate for him to work as Florida’s head coach,” Bettman said in a statement. Quenneville, 63, three-time Stanley Cup winners with the Blackhawks, drew the conclusions from an independent investigation report published on Tuesday. As a result, he is said to have counted in the season of the first title triumph in 2010 to the group responsible for the Blackhawks, who would not have done anything against a member of the coaching staff despite allegations of abuse by professional Kyle Beach. Blackhawks President Stan Bowman had resigned before Quenneville. Bowman was designated as a manager for the US ice hockey team at the Beijing Olympics. The Blackhawks were fined two million dollars.

“I admire Kyle Beach for his courage to come forward. I am appalled that he was so poorly supported in his first lawsuit and for the eleven years since, and I regret everything he has been through,” said NHL boss Bettman quoted in a statement. Beach later played in the second German division for the Tölzer Löwen and is currently under contract with third division Erfurt.
