Lakshya Sen enters quarter-finals, Sameer Verma retires from French Badminton Open

India’s Lakshya Sen advanced to the men’s singles quarter-finals with a back-to-back victory over Singaporean Loh Kean Yew, but Sameer Verma retired midway through due to an injury at the Roland tournament. Garros Super 750 Thursday. Lakshya won their second round match 21-17 21-13 in 40 minutes. He will then face Korean Heo Kwanghee or Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei. Sameer won the first game 21-16 but was unable to finish his match against Indonesian Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, retiring after losing the second game 12-21 due to injury. The Indian had also retired in the quarterfinals of the Danish Open last week after suffering a calf injury.

The mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa fought gallantly before losing 21-15 17-21 19-21 to second seed from Indonesia Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti.

Lakshya galloped to take a 13-7 lead early on, but Loh scored seven straight runs to briefly take the lead. The Indian, however, did not allow his opponent to run away as he took a 17-16 lead and pocketed the game comfortably.

In Game 2, Lakshya was leading 7-4 and although Loh recovered to 8-8, the Indian moved up to 13-11 shortly before closing the door with five straight 16-13 points.
