Heracles Almelo is looking forward to the home match against Ajax with great confidence. In recent years, the formation of trainer Frank Wormuth has presented itself as the ‘anxiety gegner’ of the team from Amsterdam.
On Saturday evening, Heracles can beat Ajax for the fourth time in five years. Wormuth thinks he knows how to frustrate the reigning champion. “First of all, we have to show our own way of playing,” he told Voetbal International. “That means: being compact, working as a rock and keeping the opponent busy. Secondly, Ajax should not have its best day. Then you really have a chance.”
The German already knows how to prevent goals against. “Ajax creates a lot of opportunities by looking for depth and then giving the withdrawal pass to the edge of the penalty area. I often show images of that to my players, because many clubs have little occupation there. midfielders recognize that and are in that place. If we are one against one everywhere on the field and win the duels, we can prevent goals against.”
Whether the figures of recent years ensure that Heracles is a serious opponent for Ajax remains to be seen, according to Wormuth. “Angstgegner is more a term for supporters and the media. But it may be that Ajax’s game suits us well. I know that Erik always says: “Heracles always has an idea against us.” The match plan for us is clear: not conceding an early goal.”
