Kevin Stöger delighted the home fans with a brace in VfL Bochum’s 3-2 home win against TSG Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga on Friday evening. The 30-year-old sank a free kick kicked over the wall with his left foot from around 17 meters into the Kreuzeck corner (34th) and was also successful with a shot (64th). For him they were the sixth and seventh goals of the season – and very important ones in the fight to stay in the league.

After eight games without a win, the Bochum team once again made a great impression and thus left the relegation place behind them at the start of the 31st round in the relegation battle. Stöger converted a direct free kick for the first time in the Bundesliga. Felix Passlack then made it 2-0 (45th + 2). Stöger initiated the third goal from his own halfway line, and in the end he had no trouble pushing a shot over the line that was blocked by Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Thanks to eight assists, the former ÖFB U21 team player has already contributed to 15 direct goals this season.

The last time a Bochum player had a better result was Stanislav Sestak in 2007/08 (20), as the statistics service Opta reported. The ninth-placed Hoffenheim team only managed cosmetic results thanks to Andrej Kramaric (73rd, 84th). Florian Grillitsch prepared the second goal with a long pass to the double goalscorer; he was in defense over the full distance.
