The sports facilities of El Quirinal will embrace this weekend the return of the “Villa de Avilés” judo tournament. The Villa del Adelantado will become the venue for the Spanish Cup for the U-13, U-15, U-18 and U-21 categories. In this 20th edition – back after the postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic – a total of 1,200 athletes from 197 clubs and 4,900 companions will participate. There will be a maximum of 800 people in the stands, who will alternate between tests.

The event will be attended by a total of 6,100 people, between competitors and the public, arriving from France, Portugal, Georgia, the United States and different parts of the Spanish geography. All of them will be duly identified and athletes in particular will undergo covid tests before competing. For this, the facilities of the athletics track adjacent to the El Quirinal sports center will be enabled.

“Asturian judo starts with quite clear podium options”, predicts Carlos Fernández, vice president of Judo Avilés and technical director of the event, who assures: “We are showing in Spanish championships that we are going through a good moment of form.” Regarding public access to the sports center, for greater control only the upper entrance will be enabled, and not the usual entrances. In addition, if the capacity allows it, the organization will let in anyone who comes during the weekend.

The official training sessions for the competition will begin today, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tomorrow Friday will be the weigh-ins, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., starting the draws half an hour later. Already on Saturday, it will be the turn for the Spanish U-18 Super Cup, at 9:00 a.m., and for the U-21 competition, at 4:45 p.m. On Sunday at 9 am the Spanish U-15 Super Cup will be held and at 2.30 pm the U-13 team competition.
