Predictable change, which had already been known for almost a week, but which became official this Monday. Roger Federer dropped two spots and was left out of the Top 10 of the ATP world rankings. The Swiss is now 11th in the standings, being overtaken by the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, who climbed like never before in their careers.
Inactive due to injury, Federer, 40, recovers and seeks to return to the circuit in 2022. Once Indian Wells was finished, that Masters 1000 was counted, the Swiss descended for the first time from the lot of the top 10 in the ATP rankings since January 2017. Thus, in 19 years, he had only been outside the world elite for three months, a place that he lost again this Monday.
Ruud, in a great season, like Hurkacz, both living the best moments as professionals, were in charge of passing Federer on the weekly list. The 22-year-old Norwegian climbed one place and ranked No. 9 in the world, while the 24-year-old Polish climbed two positions to rank No. 10, with less than 100 points over the Swiss.
In the last 22 months, Federer played no more than six tournaments due to a right knee injury that forced him to be outmatched. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary freeze in the ranking and that benefited the Swiss, until now it fell from the Top 10.
Surprising brand-new Indian Wells champion Brit Cameron Norrie improved 10 spots on the list to reach No. 16, his highest position. Meanwhile, his loser in the final of the Masters 1000 in the Californian desert, the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, rose nine places to finish 27th.
The list continues to be headed by Serbian Novak Djokovic, escorted by Russian Daniil Medvedev and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas completing the podium. The other change in the elite was that Russian Andrey Rublev gave up some units and was overtaken by Spanish Rafael Nadal in 5th place.
Among Latin Americans, Argentine Diego Schwartzman remained leader after climbing two places and is now No. 13, while Chilean Cristian Garin continues to be 17th in the world.
