ÖFB team starts with a draw in the U17 European Championship

Austria’s U17 national team started the European Football Championship in Cyprus with a draw on Monday. In a game with few chances, team boss Martin Scherb’s team had to be content with a 0-0 draw against Croatia on the first matchday of Group B in Larnaca. Denmark won the parallel game 2-0 (1-0) against Wales. The Welsh are the ÖFB boys’ next opponents on Thursday (7.30 p.m.), with the Danes waiting on Sunday.

The red-white-red youngsters presented themselves as the more active team, but they rarely got in front of the Croatian goal. After just 30 minutes, Dortmund legionnaire Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta had to leave the field and Philipp Moizi came on to replace him. The Scherb team missed their best opportunity to score after just over an hour with two hits on the goalpost. Oghenetejiri Adejenughure first hit the right beam with his head after a corner (57th). Just a few seconds later, Croatian keeper Antonio Rajic directed a shot from substitute Philipp Maybach onto the left post.

In the final phase, the ÖFB team pushed for victory. However, the Croatians successfully defended the draw, also because Magnus Dalpiaz was denied by Rajic in stoppage time. The Danes are in the lead in the table with three points, followed by Austria and Croatia with one point each. The chances of promotion are therefore intact, the top two in the group advance to the quarter-finals.
