Federer disappears from the tennis elite … and surprise with Nadal

After a week without changes, this Monday the ATP has again updated its ranking. The big news is Roger Federer’s absence from the Top 10 for the first time in almost five years.

The absence of the Swiss in Indian Wells cost him 480 points, which, combined with those added by the Polish Hubert Hurkacz and the Norwegian Casper Ruud, they have caused me to lose two positions and go from ninth to eleventh.

The Swiss champion, after a nearly white 2020 year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and two operations on his right knee, had returned to competition in spring, But after 13 games played, including a quarter-final at Wimbledon, he ended his season with persistent pain.

This prolonged absence from the courts has slowly dragged him down the world rankings, where he was still in fifth place at the beginning of the year.

Federer, who celebrated his 40th birthday this summer, entered the Top 10 on May 20, 2002. I had only left it for a few weeks between July and October 2002 and from November 2016 to January 2017 when he was on leave since July due to a knee injury.

The Swiss, winner of 20 Grand Slam tournaments, still has no plans, despite his age and knee problems, to end his career.

Another novelty in the Top 10 is the rise of Rafa Nadal. The Spaniard, despite not competing since the beginning of August, has risen from position 6 to 5 thanks to Andrey Rublev he fell prematurely at Indian Wells and lost the points he scored last year around this time.

The big rise of the week corresponds, obviously, to Cameron Norrie. The Indian Wells champion climbs 11 places to go from 26 to 15 and enters the fight to get into the ATP Finals.
