From now on there will be football in the “Matthias-Ginter-Sportpark”! The football district league club SC March has named its stadium after the 2014 world champion Matthias Ginter (27).
The club had announced the name change in the 5-0 defeat against FC Heitersheim 05 on Sunday. Previously, the club had aggressively advertised a “small, colorful supporting program with a big surprise at the end” at the next home game.
The Waldstadion is history. The “Matthias-Ginter-Sportpark” is the future.
The famous namesake was not on site at the ceremony, Ginter is with the national team and tries under new coach Hansi Flick (56) to clarify the qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.
The Gladbach professional sent a video message to his former club and thanked him. He announced, “if there is time to stop by again”.
After all, Ginter ran for the amateur club from near Freiburg for seven years. From 1998 to 2005 he laced his shoes as a youth for the club that was then still called SV March.
He then moved to the youth department of SC Freiburg. From there, his path led him to Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and finally to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2017. So far he has played 44 international matches for the national team, but did not appear on Monday in the 4-0 win against North Macedonia in Skopje.
