DFB Cup: Bavaria is in a historic debacle

Manu Kone (2nd), Ramy Bensebaini (15th, 21st / penalty) and Breel Embolo (51st, 57th), who was involved in all five goals, ensured the Gladbachers’ first cup win in front of 48,500 fans in Borussia-Park, where Hannes Wolf sat on the bench, against Bayern at all. “We pushed Bayern a little way against the wall,” said Gladbach sports director Max Eberl, adding: “The evening will definitely go down in the history of Borussia Mönchengladbach.”

The Munich team, where coach Julian Nagelsmann was still absent due to his CoV infection and Marcel Sabitzer was not used, failed again prematurely in the DFB Cup. Last season, the second round against Holstein Kiel was the final destination. “That’s shocking. We weren’t there and didn’t win a duel in the first half. We let the guts be bought from us. It was a collective blackout. For me that is inexplicable, ”said Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Breel Embolo was in top form against Bayern with a brace and assist

Leading goal after 76 seconds

Bayern lacked game control, bite and ideas – there were also many hair-raising mistakes, especially the completely indisposed newcomer Dayot Upamecano. It took just 76 seconds when Gladbach cheered for the first time. Kone captured the ball against Alphonso Davies and, in conjunction with Embolo, shot himself in for the lead. It was an effective hit from which the Munich did not recover.

The Gladbachers played themselves into a frenzy, while the Bavarians were completely off the track. Jonas Hofmann escaped Upamecano and released the ball in front of Manuel Neuer next to the goal (9th). Then Embolo forced the German team goal to parry (11th), before Zakaria just missed the goal (12th).

Bavaria harmless and flawed

The second hit was only a matter of time. After a dream pass from Hofmann, Bensebaini struck ice cold (15th). It was also the Algerian who showed no nerves at the penalty kick. Lucas Hernandez had previously brought down Embolo in the penalty area. In any case, the Bavarians were unrecognizable. A shot from Serge Gnabry (35th) and an action by Leroy Sane (43rd) – that was it in half one.

After the Munich team came out of the dressing room with renewed courage after the break, Upamecano ruined everything with another faux pas. Embolo thanked him with a brilliant shot (51.). After that it was over for Upamecano, but the mistakes did not end. Denis Zakaria failed free in front of Neuer (54th). But only three minutes later the doorbell rang again with a shot from Embolo at Neuer (57th). After that, Bayern only wanted to limit the damage.

Last stop for Leverkusen too

Before that, Bayer Leverkusen had surprisingly failed at Karlsruher SC. The Rhinelander were defeated by the second division side 1: 2 (0: 1) on Wednesday evening and missed the round of the last 16 teams for the first time in five years. Christoph Kobald played through at Karlsruhe. 1. FC Union Berlin also struggled for a long time, but prevailed with Christopher Trimmel (up to 103rd) against third division SV Waldhof Mannheim with 3-1 after extra time.

In the Bundesliga duel, VfL Bochum defeated FC Augsburg (Michael Gregoritsch from 75th) on penalties 5-4. Gregoritsch made good use of his attempt. Cologne won 2-0 at Stuttgart thanks to two goals from striker Anthony Modeste (72nd, 77th). Second division table leader FC St. Pauli moved back into the round of 16 for the first time since the 2005/06 season, Guido Burgstaller played 3-2 after extra time against league rivals Dynamo Dresden (Michael Sollbauer from 77th).
