Deaf Badminton Champion Emma Reymond Selected to Carry Olympic Flame

“The deaf and hard of hearing, we don’t see them much. I wanted to show that they exist. And then it’s a pride, an honor to represent France“, says Emma Reymond, 21, about the motivations that prompted her to apply to carry the Olympic flame when it passes through the area on May 12.

This young multi-medalist badminton champion, severely and profoundly deaf from birth, had completed two different applications: one on the website of the Banque Populaire foundation, its sponsor, and one on the website of the Torch Relay.

It was with this that she was selected: “I didn’t believe it when I received the email. I felt great emotion. Now I’m excited and waiting for the information, it’s trickling in. I know it will be in Cassis, on May 12, over 200 meters. I have an appointment at 6:30 a.m., but I don’t know where yet“, says the young girl, whose sporting career commands respect.

“Walls of disability to overcome”

The journey of a child not really spoiled by nature: deaf from birth, but also suffering from pulmonary problems and hyperactive, finding a sport that suited her was not easy for her parents: “She practiced athletics but as it was outdoors, it was not easy with her health problems. As I played badminton for leisure, I suggested that I try it.
