Colonel Assimi Goita basketball tournament: A cultural and sporting link between the young people of Mali

The members of the Organizing Committee of the Colonel Assimi Goita basketball tournament were in front of the press on Tuesday, October 20, in a hotel in the square, to talk about the said tournament which will be held from October 25 to December 18, 2021. This tournament aims to create a cultural and sporting intermixing link between the young people of Mali.

The conference was moderated by Souleymane Bouaré, president of the Organizing Committee of the tournament; accompanied by Ousmane Dicko, secretary general of the Bamako district basketball league; Moussa Sidibé, coach and member of the Organizing Committee.

Reserved for young people under 19, the Colonel Assimi Goïta basketball tournament will bring together 28 teams, 14 of which are for girls and as many for boys. The regional basketball leagues as well as the six basketball districts of Bamako will be represented at this tournament by two selections (girls and boys).

According to Souleymane Bouaré, president of the Organizing Committee of the tournament, today Mali is a basketball country which has achieved extraordinary results on the African and international level, especially among young people. “These results obviously push us to support this category which is straddling the small categories and the seniors. I am sure that if we have a regular follow-up of this category we can do the same at the senior level. This is to give this age category the chance to meet in Bamako during a final phase, to discuss, to learn something else in addition to basketball. During the tournament, these young people will have the opportunity to make guided sightseeing tours through the capital ”, he indicated.

To answer the question, why is the tournament named after Colonel Assimi Goita? The president of the Organizing Committee clarified that they gave the name of the tournament to the president of the Transition in order to draw his attention to Malian basketball. “You are aware that Mali is currently one of the best African basketball nations, especially in the youth categories. This very successful discipline really needs support from the highest authorities in the country. This is why we decided to organize this tournament by associating the name of the president of the Transition ”, he hinted.

The members of the Organizing Committee took advantage of this launch press conference to hand over sets of jerseys to the secretary general of the Bamako District Basketball League, Ousmane Dicko, who, in turn, will hand them over to the participating teams. Mahamadou TRAORE
