Basketball: a Frenchwoman takes the reins of the Netherlands

The French sector has, it seems, a bright future ahead of it in the Netherlands. While in handball, Metz coach Emmanuel Mayonnade led the 2019 Dutch women’s team until last month – finally ousted after his team’s failure at the Tokyo Olympics – basketball Oranje in turn trusts a tricolor trainer.

A coach, more precisely, since Julie Barennes, former professional player and wing for Nice (2004-07), Arras (2007-09) and Basket Landes (2009-12 and 2013-17), was appointed Friday coach of the Netherlands women’s team. She succeeds Hakim Salem, who left to train in Switzerland (Nyon Basket).

Euro 2023 in Slovenia and Israel in the sights

Just crowned champion of France with Basket Landes, two seasons after being named coach of the 2019-20 season in the EuroCoupe, Barennes is one of the popular coaches of the moment. At only 35, she therefore takes charge of the Dutch women’s section, with which she is engaged until 2023.

And will aim to “qualify for the European Championship in 2023, have fun together and play attractive basketball,” she said in a statement released by the Dutch Federation. The Orange Lionesses have in fact no longer qualified for a Euro since 1989. The Frenchwoman will retain a double cap as coach and coach of Basket Landes, with whom she participates in the prestigious women’s EuroLeague this season.
