Just a month ago, Agnes Tirop set a world record over ten kilometers in a road race in Herzogenaurach. Now the 25-year-old has died in her Kenyan homeland. First findings suggest a crime.
Dhe Olympic fourth and road world record holder Agnes Tirop from Kenya was found dead in her house, according to the Kenyan Athletics Association. Media reports on Wednesday showed photos of a police operation in Iten in the north-west of the country, where many runners live and train. Kenya has lost a jewel, the association said. One is beside oneself with grief for the aspiring runner.
Citing anonymous sources, the BBC reported that Tirop was wounded with cuts to his stomach and neck. According to the Kenyan Association, this could have been caused by her husband, but work is still being done to find out details about her death.
In Tokyo, Tirop was fourth
Tirop, who started her career in 2011, set a world record over ten kilometers on the road in pure women’s races a month ago in a race in Herzogenaurach in 30:01 minutes and last came second over the same distance on October 3rd in a road race in Geneva . Last week she took part in the half marathon in Valencia, where she also came in second.
The 25-year-old won two World Cup bronze medals over 10,000 meters and took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo for Kenya, where she was fourth in the 5000 meters and missed a medal by just 0.75 seconds in August. As a 19-year-old Tirop won the world title in cross in 2015.
