Youth World Cup players with 18 golds

The youth and cadet world championships with 18 golds are the most graced in this province, if we compare the contributions in the great international competitions of a world nature.

The top titles have been achieved in chess, baseball, boxing, judo, wrestling and volleyball, but the Northeast have competed in 17 disciplines and also compile 11 silver and nine bronze.

Several youth world champions later became Olympic and / or adult world champions, such as boxers Mario Kindelàn and Ángel Espinosa, baseball player Alberto Hernández, judokas Legna Verdecia and Yurisleidis Lupetey, Greco-Roman fighter Pedro Roque and volleyball player Martha Sánchez.

The sport with the most youth world golds in Holguín is baseball with eight, but individually there are more crowned, since in several teams there was more than one Northeast. Sagüero shortstop Mariano González on two occasions (1986 and 1987) was chosen the best player of those competitions.

Others later stood out with the Holguín team in National Series such as the late Ricardo Bent (first baseman), Alberto Hernández (receiver), Jorge Cruz (shortstop), Alberto Cabrejas (pitcher) and Jorge Luis Duboys (first baseman).

The Greco-Roman and free wrestling, youth and cadets have contributed four gold metals, while boxing and judo add two gold medals each. One gold has chess and another has volleyball.
