The Tour of Spain in 2022 will begin in the Netherlands, where the first three stages will be held, two years after the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of a project that also had to replace several previous days in France and Portugal. The next edition of the Spanish round, between August 19 and September 11, will start from Utrecht, with a team time trial that will go through the streets of the Dutch city, with the second stage between Hertogenbosch and Utrecht and the third in Breda , starting and ending in this city of North Brabant.

It will be the second time in history that the Vuelta will be inaugurated abroad, and again in the Netherlands, since the 2009 edition began at the mythical Assen circuit, and also passed through Belgium and Germany. «We put new dates on a project that has already been working for almost six years. These months of waiting have not changed the desire for collaboration, the enthusiasm and the ambition that we have put from day one in organizing this official outing (on August 19, 2022). A start for history, which will mark a milestone for Spanish and Dutch cycling, “says the general director of the Vuelta, Javier Guillén.

“We have eagerly awaited the start of the Vuelta en Holland project and we can’t wait to get going. The aim is to strengthen more than ever the special bond that already exists between Spain and the Netherlands ”, highlighted the Mayor of Utrecht, Sharon Dijksma. Precisely, the departure of the Vuelta from Utrecht will also coincide with a very special anniversary, since it will mark 900 years of its recognition as a city (in 1122). The Vuelta was scheduled to depart from Holland in its 2020 edition, but the irruption of the pandemic led to the cancellation of the stages planned in that country also to shorten its route.
