Vormer wanted to hand in the captain’s armband at Club Brugge: “He was very disappointed” | Jupiler Pro League

It was a little black edge to a golden evening. The fact that Ruud Vormer did not get any playing minutes in the historic match against PSG left marks on the midfielder. He even wanted to give up his captaincy. “But I told him that he is our captain forever,” said trainer Philippe Clement.

90 minutes on the couch. Ruud Vormer had imagined his appointment with the history of Club Brugge against PSG completely differently.

When the former Golden Boot learned at the beginning of this week that he would not start in the starting lineup, Vormer even offered to relinquish his captaincy. “He was very emotional two days before the game,” coach Philippe Clement admitted at a press moment today. “After the tactical training, he said that he was having a hard time with it. And that he asked himself whether he should remain captain.”

For Clement, the answer was clear: “I told him that he should definitely remain our captain. There are also other captains who do not finish every game for their club. Like Marco Reus at Dortmund. I told Ruud that he should think better for an evening before making a final decision. The next day he came to say that he wanted to remain captain.”

Ruud was disappointed that he was not allowed to fill in, but he trained well yesterday.

Only Vormer got a new slap after he was not even allowed to come in against PSG. “He was very disappointed, but yesterday he trained well with the group. It is a pity that he is now experiencing problems with the Achilles tendon. As a result, he cannot play this weekend.”

Heusden-Zolder

The minor niggle, however, will not overshadow Club’s great performance against PSG. Clement beamed at his press conference: “I have received a lot of congratulations from fellow coaches from the Jupiler Pro League. Also from board members of other clubs. And even from abroad. That was good.”

Although the coach also immediately focused on the match against Charleroi next weekend. “I’ve experienced it in the past: winning in AC Milan and then losing to Heusden-Zolder… Then Charleroi is another level – they haven’t lost a single match this season. But I had the feeling that the button already was turned over again at my group.”
