This Saturday starts in Yaoundé (Cameroon) the Afrobasket Femenino 2021, and it does so with a game with a marked Spanish accent: the Mali-Tunisia of this first day will face two Spanish technicians in the position of coach: Joaquin Brizuela on the Malian bench and Richi González Davila in the Tunisian.

Both teams are framed in the same group of the first phase of the championship, along with the Ivory Coast. The first of each group will go directly to the quarterfinal crossings, and the second and third parties will play a round of 16 match.

Brizuela and González Dávila are not the first Spanish coaches to participate in a Women’s Afrobasket. In recent editions, José Ruiz (Mali 2013) and Julián Martínez (Mozambique 2019) also did so.

Twelve national teams are participating in the 2021 Women’s Afrobasket: hosts Cameroon, Angola, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Mozabique, Nigeria and Senegal, as well as Mali and Tunisia. The finals for the medals will be played next Sunday the 26th.

In the Men’s Afrobasket, held a few weeks ago, there was also Spanish representation on the benches. Natxo Lezkano (silver) and Pep Clarós acted as coaches for Ivory Coast and Angola respectively.
