Judo Takes Center Stage in Camerino: Regional Event Brings Together 300 Athletes

4′ read 27/04/2024 – There will be a total of around 300 judokas who will liven up the tatamis of the Orsini university sports halls in Le Calvie tomorrow morning, on the occasion of a major regional event which will bring together four distinct events.

First of all in the Marche Region Youth Grand Prix reserved for pre-competitors (children and teenagers) and where the majority of young athletes will be involved, with the tournament which will take place in the afternoon (starting at 3pm) and will award the “1st Trophy City of Camerino”. However, the entire event will begin in the morning (at 9 am the first matches), with the Qualifications for the Italian Championships, then the Qualification for the Italian Championships for Beginners B, then also the Regional Championship for Beginners A (also valid for being part of the Marche representative at the 2024 Coni Trophy scheduled for October in Catania). It should be underlined that only black belts from the Cadet, Junior and Senior categories are admitted to the qualifying tournament for the Italian Championships, so the level of the matches will be very high.

A 360 degree show for lovers of Judo but also of sport in general, in a compelling setting as also demonstrated during last year’s CNU in Camerino.

How was the idea of organizing this event in Camerino born?
“It was born thanks to the membership as Cus Camerino of the Federation, the FiJLKAM Marche – explains the president of the Judo sector of the same Angelo Mecanti – and from the friendship with Roberto Cambriani who is an exquisite person and always very helpful. When the University Championships took place in Camerino last year, as a representative of the federation I proposed: why don’t we organize all the qualifiers up here in a hall like this, put up the tatamis and then organize a tournament for the city? Then I also spoke with the mayor Roberto Lucarelli and the sports councilor Silvia Piscini and from here the idea of the Gran Premio Giovanissimi was born, they gave their patronage and now we’ll see the results tomorrow. For the Junior Grand Prix alone there are around 200 registered.”

How does FiJLKAM Marche see the role of Cus Camerino in this discipline where it boasts a prestigious national and international curriculum at university level?
“Cus Camerino has always been well-regarded – adds Mercanti – because it plays a fundamental role, especially for kids who are not part of the Armed Forces and who enroll at university and are still valuable athletes and also come out as champions. This was seen during the last CNU in Camerino last year where there were a lot of athletes. Therefore the Federation cares a lot about the Cus, so much so that this year the Cus Macerata has also become affiliated and next year there will be the Cnu in Ancona and we are also working on the membership of the Cus Ancona to our federation. For us, the Cus are very important, because they still serve as a meeting point for judoka from the Marche (competitors and non-competitors) who are enrolled in universities and can also compete in important competitions and trophies under the flags of their respective Cus”.

Given the solid foundations between Cus Camerino and FiJLKAM Marche, will it be possible to organize and see high-level national and perhaps even international events in Camerino?
“If it were up to me there would be no problem – adds the president of the judo sector – the running-in has already been done with the 2023 CNU and it was passed with great success and it was a nice launching pad. So it is very possible to do it, as well as organize a national final. You just need to organize yourself, meet, get together with all the parties involved and talk about it and then collaborate together in planning the event. It’s one thing to do one stage of the Gran Premio Giovanissimi, the second will be organized in Civitanova, it’s another thing to do a high-level race, but little by little we’ll get to that too.”

Specifically, at what age can a child be introduced to judo?
“The point is that the federation – specifies Mercanti – especially recently and with specific programs allows children to register and become members as early as the age of 3. It is one of the few federations that allows this from this age and does so with specific projects, which also include psychomotor work, games and everything that is preparatory to judo and also to other sports”.
