The Italian GP has been marked by the accident that has knocked out Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman, fired up after a bad pit stop, met Lewis Hamilton at the end of the finish line when the Briton, in turn, made his stop.

Both have reached the first chicane evenly matched, with Hamilton slightly ahead. The contact was inevitable, and Verstappen’s Red Bull ended up on top of Hamilton’s Mercedes. The ‘halo’ has prevented the Red Bull’s rear tire from crushing the seven-time champion.

Both drivers suffered no apparent damage, but the cars were stopped in a safety zone.

The accident occurred on lap 26 of the 53 scheduled and forced the safety car to leave, when Australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) led the test ahead of Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).

Neither Verstappen, world leader with 226.5 points, nor Hamilton (221.5) will score points in the Italian Grand Prix, 14th round of the season (of the 22 scheduled), although the Dutchman increases his advantage thanks to the two points scored on Saturday after finishing second in the sprint race that served to define the GP starting grid.

This abandonment prevents Hamilton from achieving his 100th victory in Formula 1 and the next opportunity to achieve it will be at the Russian Grand Prix, at the Sochi circuit, on September 26.
