Despite a performance on offense, the University of Ottawa (U of O) Gee-Gees baseball team were unable to win a game opener this season. Last night, she suffered a 7-6 setback against the Carleton University (UC) Ravens at Kinsmen Field. The Gray and Garnet therefore suffered a fifth defeat in as many games.

It was the Ravens who opened the scoring in the first set. However, the Gee-Gees were quick to respond with an infield from fielder Chris Jelley who scored his team’s first points late in the second inning. The number 9 hit a double that allowed two runners to score points.

” It is very frustrating [car] we always want to win against Carleton; we had a good lead and we were playing well, but we weren’t able to keep that lead, ”said Jelley. He hopes that the team will train more and that in the next game the result will be different.

Positive in defeat

In seven innings, Gee-Gees starting pitcher Jerome Murray struck out five batters. He also allowed eight hits. Gee-Gees assistant coach Matti Emery says Murray “did a fantastic job [sic] and gave [à l’équipe] a chance to win ”.

Although the Gee-Gees are on a five-game losing streak this season, Emery reckoned his team had played “eight great innings.” He adds that the team’s defense has been very good and that he hopes his players learn from the loss.

Preparation for regional championships

With a 15-game schedule, the Gray and Garnet are polishing their preparation for the regional championships, including eight games against their divisional opponents, the UC Ravens and the Queen’s University Gaels. “With the games we are playing now, we are able to build on the good things we are doing on the field. The way we played in the first eight sets tonight will help us be successful, ”Emery said. The regional championships will take place on October 9 and 10.

The Gee-Gees will be back in action this weekend, as they play a doubles program this Saturday, October 2 against the Queen’s University Gaels at Megaffin Park in Kingston. The next day, the two teams will meet for another doubles program, this time in Ottawa.
