history

After being introduced by British and Amateur Sports Associations in the 1920s, badminton gained widespread popularity around the world. Malaya and Singapore.[2] Against this background, SBA was established a few years later in 1929 with Tan Boo Teck as its first president.[3] When the SBA was formed, the SBA allowed badminton parties, essentially teams of badminton enthusiasts, to partner with them and participate in the annual Open Championship.[4]

The next Japanese job, SBA, had to deal with the loss of some of the best players in the war, lack of adequate facilities and rising costs of maintaining the club.[4] Nevertheless, Malaya, to which Singapore was a part at the time, prepared to send their first team in 1949. Thomas Cup.[1] The team eventually won the final in England, beating Denmark 8-1.[1]

The lack of proper facilities meant that SBA players started practicing on the outdoor courts.[1] SBA meetings were held mainly in the Clerical Union Hall.[4] However, winning the Thomas Cup started a fundraising event to build a badminton hall. Despite the donation, SBA struggled with construction costs and transferred ownership of the badminton hall to the Singapore Sports Council (now Sports Singapore).[1] The Singapore Badminton Hall, which eventually doubled as SBA’s headquarters, opened in 1952.[4]

In January 2008, the SBA lease at the Singapore badminton hall expired. Then SBA went to Singapore Sports School.[5] SBA is now a Singapore sports hub, after the construction of the latter was completed in 2014.[6]

SBA Badminton Academy

In 2017, SBA partnered with ActiveSG to launch the Singapore Badminton Academy.[7] The academy, led by former Olympic Athlete Jang Yan Mei, offers a series of badminton programs for children aged 6-17 years old across Singapore.[8] Many former national shuttle buses are part of the academy’s coaching team.
