Gombos defeats Jarry and equals the series for Slovakia

The Slovak tennis player was too much for the Chilean Nicolás Jarry and he beat him in three sets (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3) for the second point of the Davis Cup series and equalize the score between Slovakia and Chile . All matched for the defining day of Saturday.

Second point of this tie between Slovakia and Chile, with a local team more in need of victory, taking into account that minutes before, Cristian Garín opened the scoring in favor of the South Americans, against Alex Molcan. This point faced the always complicated Norbert Gombos already Nicolas Jarry.

The local did not arrive in good time to this duel, since it came with a streak of six consecutive defeats and a negative season in general. For his part, for Nico this has been a good year if we think that he started it without adding ATP points, and now he is No.214 in the ranking. The 25-year-old Chilean managed to play two finals and win a title, all at the Challenger level.

Gombos triumphs despite doubts

The game would bring Jarry several problems early, with a determined and solid Gombos, who started a break up on the scoreboard. Little by little the Chilean was finding better feelings, especially with the service, but they were not enough to beat the strength of the Slovak. It was only at 3-5 that Nico had a chance to regain the break, but that could not be achieved. That way, Gombos took over the first set 6-3.

After an even second-set start, the Slovak himself once again unbalanced the story in his favor, in this case in the fifth game, approaching victory. Again a similar panorama to the first set, with a Jarry who went on to easily win his games on serve, but who could not play the games on the return. Gombos seemed unbeatable, increasing the speed of the ball and supported by the fervor of the Bratislava crowd. However, the tension made him hesitate to close the game, and there appeared the claw of Nicolás, to get 5-5 and stretch the definition. In an absolutely even tiebreak, Jarry took a slight advantage to take the match to a third set.

The Chilean bank led by Nicolás Massú exploded with excitement and encouragement for Jarry, who was now starting as a favorite for the defining set. However, Gombos returned to the level it had before, and again broke first, reaching a 5-2 difference in favor. This time, the local did not miss the opportunity and sealed the victory, a while later than expected, with another 6-3.
